Instagram auto responder: how to set up auto replies that deliver

An Instagram auto responder answers for you when someone asks for something. ReplyMagnet does that for comments: a public reply under the comment and a DM carrying your resource, sent within seconds.

What an Instagram auto responder does, and where ReplyMagnet fits

ReplyMagnet is the Instagram auto responder to use when people ask for something in your comments: it posts a public reply and sends a DM with the resource. For a plain acknowledgement of every incoming DM, Instagram's own free instant reply is enough.

People searching for an Instagram auto responder usually want one of two things. Either every message gets an instant acknowledgement, or a request such as ‘send me the guide’ gets answered without anyone typing. ReplyMagnet is built for the second job.

ReplyMagnet is not a general inbox autoresponder. It does not answer every DM, it does not send away messages, and it never messages someone because they followed you. It answers requests, through Meta's reviewed API, in the places listed below. For what else is safe to automate, see our Instagram automation guide.

Start free: the free plan includes 1,000 engagements a month, and the 30-day trial needs no card.

Instagram's built-in options: saved replies, quick replies, instant replies and away messages

Instagram's own tools are free: saved replies insert text you send by hand, and Meta Business Suite on desktop can send an instant reply, an away message, and a comment-to-message DM to comments with your keywords, per Meta's help center.

Before paying for anything, check whether the built-in tools already cover the job. Menus change between app versions, and the Business Suite automations need the Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page, so confirm what your own account shows. Meta documents saved replies in its professional inbox help and the Business Suite automations, including comment to message, in its inbox automations guide, checked 23 October 2026.

Meta's comment to message covers a simple keyword-to-DM reply. A comment automation tool earns its place when you want more around that DM. ReplyMagnet adds a public reply under the comment, a delivery page that can ask for an email before the file, AI matching for comments that miss the keyword, and lead records you can export or sync. Our saved replies vs DM automation guide compares the two approaches in more depth.

Built-in replies or comment automation: which one fits

Use Instagram's built-in tools to acknowledge DMs, and comment automation when a post invites people to ask for a resource. Many accounts run both: an instant reply for the inbox and a keyword campaign for the post.

Choose by the job in front of you, not by follower count:

  • Every DM should get a ‘thanks, we will reply soon’. Use Instant reply in Meta Business Suite. It is free and already built in.
  • You type the same answer by hand all day. Use saved replies, so you still read each message before it goes.
  • A post or Reel asks people to comment a word. Meta's free comment to message handles a plain keyword-to-DM reply. Use ReplyMagnet when you also want a public reply, an email captured before the file, matching for comments that miss the keyword, or lead records.
  • People DM a word from your story or bio. Use a DM keyword campaign, so the word itself starts the delivery.
  • The request needs judgement, such as a refund. Keep a person on it. No auto responder should guess.

If you switch on ReplyMagnet's first-DM welcome, turn off the Business Suite instant reply. Otherwise one first message gets two greetings.

What to prepare before you set up auto reply

Four things are needed before setup: a Business or Creator account, the resource to send, the place to listen and a short trigger keyword. A personal profile cannot connect, because Instagram only exposes comments and messages for professional accounts.

Have these ready before you open the campaign wizard:

  • A Business or Creator account. Switching the account type takes about two minutes in the Instagram app.
  • The resource: a PDF up to 25 MB, or your own link as a link asset from the $9 plan.
  • The place to listen: one post, several posts, all posts, story replies, Live comments or DMs.
  • A trigger keyword that is short and unlikely to appear by accident. Our trigger keyword ideas give examples by niche.

The example in this guide is a home-organising Reel offering a one-page cupboard checklist. The keyword is CUPBOARD.

How to set up auto reply on Instagram, step by step

Connect the professional account, choose where to listen, set the keyword, attach the resource, write the public reply and DM, then launch and comment from a second account. A first campaign takes a few minutes once the materials are ready.

Instagram auto responder setup in ReplyMagnet: choose the keyword, select the post, write the reply and launch

  1. Connect your Business or Creator account through Instagram's own permission screen. You never share a password. Check the account name before approving.
  2. Start a campaign and choose the surface: posts, story replies, Live or direct messages. For posts, pick a single post for the first test.
  3. Add the keyword. Matching respects word boundaries, so GUIDE fires on ‘send the guide’ but not on ‘guideline’. Leave AI matching off until the keyword works.
  4. Attach the resource and write two short messages: the public reply (‘Sent you the checklist by DM’) and the DM text. ReplyMagnet adds the tracked link itself.
  5. Choose a gate only if you need one: email on every plan, phone from the $9 plan, or the optional follow check. Most first campaigns need none.
  6. Launch, then comment CUPBOARD from a second account and follow the reply, the DM and the link through to the file.

The mechanics behind each screen are in the comment-to-DM automation guide, and the campaign reference shows every field.

Auto reply DMs: keyword triggers and a first-message welcome

ReplyMagnet auto-replies to Instagram DMs in two ways: a keyword in the message delivers that keyword's resource, and a welcome campaign answers a person's first DM once. Neither fires on a follow, because Meta requires the person to message first.

Set the campaign surface to Direct messages to answer DMs. There are two modes:

  • DM keyword. Someone sends PRICE or BROCHURE and receives the matching resource. Useful when a story or bio says ‘DM me GUIDE’.
  • First-DM welcome. The first message a person sends the account gets one reply, once per person. Keyword campaigns are checked first, so a GUIDE request gets the guide rather than a greeting.

There are also things it will not do. It does not reply to every message in an ongoing chat, and it does not greet someone the moment they follow. Meta's messaging rules start from a message the person sends, and the reply must go out within 24 hours. Setup and test cases are in the DM welcome message guide.

Instagram rules every auto responder works within

Meta allows a private reply to an Instagram comment within 7 days and a DM reply within 24 hours, according to its Instagram Messaging API documentation. Every auto responder, ReplyMagnet included, works inside those windows.

These limits come from Instagram's API and Meta's policies, not from any single tool. ReplyMagnet's app passed Meta App Review in August 2026 for reading comments and sending messages. The full list, with what each rule means for your copy, is in the DM automation rules guide.

Rule

Professional accounts only

What it means for your campaign
A personal profile cannot connect to any auto responder.

Rule

7-day window on comments

What it means for your campaign
A queued request older than 7 days expires instead of sending.

Rule

24-hour window on DMs and story replies

What it means for your campaign
The reply has to go out within a day of the person's message.

Rule

Live comments only while live

What it means for your campaign
Private replies to a Live comment stop when the broadcast ends.

Rule

No follow requirement

What it means for your campaign
Meta's spam policy bars demanding a follow for content. The follow check is optional and off by default.

Rule

Links, not attachments

What it means for your campaign
The DM carries a link to the file rather than the file itself.

Worked example: one Reel, 300 requests, real numbers

A Reel with 400 comments, 300 of them asking for the checklist, uses 300 engagements, because ReplyMagnet counts one per answered comment. The free plan's 1,000 a month covers about three posts like that, and $9 a month covers 25,000.

Run the numbers on the cupboard checklist Reel:

  • 400 comments arrive over the first two days.
  • 300 contain CUPBOARD or a clear request. Each gets a public reply and a DM, counted together as one engagement.
  • 100 are compliments or questions. They get no automated reply, and you answer the questions yourself.
  • 300 engagements sits well under the 1,000 included free each month.
  • A busier month with 4,000 requests fits inside the $9 plan's 25,000. At $29 a month you get 100,000, billed flat rather than per contact.

If a spike runs past your quota, requests are not dropped. The overflow queue parks them and sends oldest-first when headroom returns, on every plan.

After launch, read the campaign activity in order: matched, replied, delivered, opened, captured. A wide gap between delivered and opened often means the DM does not say what the link is.

Where Instagram auto replies go wrong

Most failed Instagram auto replies come from testing with the owner's own account, a keyword that hides inside ordinary words, or two tools answering the same post. Each one is quick to check before the post goes live.

Run through this list before you promote the post:

  • Testing from your own account. Comments from the connected profile are ignored by design. Use a second account.
  • A keyword hidden inside other words. Pick a word nobody types by accident, then post an unrelated comment and confirm it gets nothing.
  • Two tools on one post. Turn off the other automation first, or each commenter receives two DMs.
  • A broken link. Open the file on a phone before launch, not after.
  • Copy that promises the wrong thing. The caption, public reply and DM should name the same resource.

When a test DM still does not arrive, the comment-to-DM troubleshooting guide walks through each stage in order.

Common questions

Can Instagram auto reply to every DM?

Instagram's instant reply in Meta Business Suite can answer the first message of each new conversation for free. ReplyMagnet answers DMs only when they contain a campaign keyword or are a person's first message to the account.

Does ReplyMagnet send a DM when someone follows me?

No. A follow alone cannot start a message under Meta's rules. ReplyMagnet replies after a person comments, replies to a story or sends a DM first.

Are Instagram saved replies automatic?

No. Instagram saved replies insert prepared text after you type a shortcut, and you still press send. They save typing but never answer on their own.

Is ReplyMagnet's Instagram auto responder free?

Yes. The free plan includes 1,000 engagements a month on one account with one live campaign. Paid plans start at $9 a month for 25,000, and the 30-day trial needs no card.

What happens if I get more comments than my plan allows?

Comments beyond the monthly quota wait in the overflow queue on every plan and send oldest-first when headroom returns. A request is skipped only if its 7-day reply window closes first.
